Respect is the practice of recognizing human worth—especially when differences, pressure, fear, or conflict make that practice difficult.

Respect is more than politeness

Politeness can be useful, but respect reaches deeper. It means listening without erasing another person, telling the truth without cruelty, protecting rights that belong to everyone, and refusing to treat people as disposable.

Respect and democracy

Democracy depends on the belief that every person counts, that power must be accountable, that participation should be protected, and that disagreement does not cancel citizenship.

Respect in everyday life

Most respect is not dramatic. It is seen in a supervisor who listens, a neighbor who helps, a family member who apologizes, or a citizen who speaks up when someone else is being diminished.
